This week, HBO released a documentary on the feminist punk group Pussy Riot and the trial that landed two of them in Russian prison for a two year sentence (one of the accused women has been released). Although the documentary doesn’t go too deep into the actual politics in Russia that motivated the formation of the group and the protest, it does give you a glimpse into their childhood and why they would have formed a group like Pussy Riot. We also get the perspective of all the people that were offended by their protest. One church member called them a “demon with a brain” (is that supposed to be an insult?!). When we first blogged about this story we realized that whatever the outcome, there was no denying their power and this documentary only demonstrates that even more. More than anything, they have inspired us at ArithmaChic and hope they do the same for you.
